Yorkshire Water Urges Customers to Prepare for Winter
18/10/2011
Yorkshire Water has launched a campaign to help home-owners avoid frozen pipes and disrupted water supplies this winter.
Last year the company dealt with five times the normal number of burst mains and received 15,000 calls about frozen water pipes in December alone, during the coldest winter on record. As predictions are to prepare for another cold winter Yorkshire Water has issued advice to customers to make their homes ready for the cold temperatures.
It is recommended that all exposed pipe work, cisterns, tanks, taps and water meters in unheated areas are wrapped in waterproof foam lagging or insulation to prevent them freezing up.
Property owners are advised to know where the stop tap is located in their property in case it needs to be turned off in an emergency.
Tell a neighbour or friend if you plan to go away on holiday so that they can check the property to make sure there have been no burst pipes.
Always make sure you have a plumber’s number handy in case of an emergency and keep homes warm by setting central heating on a low heat or a 24-hour constant settings.
